The Department of Geography & Planning and the Centre for Indigenous Studies in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invite applications for a full-time tenure stream position in the area of Indigenous Studies and the Environment. The successful candidate will be appointed in the Department of Geography & Planning (51%) and to the Centre for Indigenous Studies (49%). The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor and will commence on July 1, 2019, or shortly thereafter. Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. degree in Indigenous Studies, Geography, Planning, Environmental Studies, or a related field by the time of appointment or shortly thereafter. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and strengthen our existing departmental strengths: and The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research at the highest international level and to establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program. Candidates must have a demonstrated record of research and publications centered on Indigenous environmental knowledge/issues, as well as proven experience in community-engaged scholarship. A demonstrated record of experience and engagement including relationship building, long-standing relationships, and work with community leaders and Elders/Knowledge Keepers is required. Candidates must also demonstrate long-term experience and ethical engagement with Indigenous organizations and institutions and evidence of understanding the importance of consensus-building relationships. Engagement with Indigenous communities will be demonstrated through reference letters and other application materials. Candidates will have an emerging record of scholarly accomplishments and will provide evidence of excellence in research as demonstrated by publications in leading, field relevant academic journals, or forthcoming impactful publications meeting high international standards, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, a strong record in Indigenous research methodologies and ethical engagement, collaboration with Indigenous communities, organizations, and institutions, and strong endorsements from referees of high standing. Candidates must be able to demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, through a teaching portfolio that includes a statement of teaching philosophy that is linked to evidence of excellent pedagogical practice, sample course syllabi, demonstrated knowledge and experience in Indigenous-based teaching methods, and excellent course evaluations (and/or demonstrated superior performance in other teaching-related activities, including performance as a teaching assistant, or experience in leading successful workshops and seminars), as well as strong endorsements from referees. The candidate's responsibilities will include teaching large and small undergraduate courses in Indigenous Studies and undergraduate and graduate courses in Geography & Planning. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The Department of Geography & Planning at the University of Toronto exists as an undergraduate unit based on the downtown “St. George” campus (with more than 3,000 students enrolled in more than 70 Geography courses) and simultaneously as a tri-campus graduate unit with graduate students and graduate faculty distributed across all three UofT campuses (St. George, UTM, and UTSC). We offer undergraduate Specialist, Major and Minor (B.A. and B.Sc.) programs in Human Geography, Environmental Geography, and Physical and Environmental Geography, in addition to Minor programs in Geographical Information Systems, Environment and Energy, and Asian Geographies. The undergraduate program is dedicated to the scholarly study and research of the priorities and aspirations of Indigenous peoples in Canada and throughout the world. An important goal of the program is to provide an opportunity for Indigenous and non-Indigenous students to learn and think about Indigenous knowledges in creative, transformative, and critical ways. The undergraduate program offers courses that engender a rigorous and respectful understanding of Indigenous peoples’ languages, knowledges, cultures, histories, politics, arts, intellectual traditions, teaching traditions, and research methodologies. A key feature of the program is its respect and promotion of Indigenous knowledges, as evidenced by the commitment to Indigenous language instruction and courses devoted to the topic of Indigenous knowledges.
