Visiting Scholar of Indigenous Studies (Job Class: Fellow 9752)
The Institute for Advanced Study at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus invites applications for a two-year appointment for an early-career scholar as part of the Environmental Stewardship, Place, and Community Initiative. The Institute for Advanced Study is an interdisciplinary center that serves the entire University of Minnesota System by incubating creative, cross-college, interdisciplinary initiatives through faculty and graduate fellowships, collaboratives, public programming, a journal of public scholarship, and the like. The Humanities-led Environmental Stewardship, Place, and Community Initiative is one such project. Funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, this project is a three-campus initiative that prioritizes integration of Indigenous epistemologies and concepts of environmental stewardship in the humanities. The project includes a cohort of 20 people across the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, Duluth, and Morris campuses working toward three common goals: curriculum development, research objectives, and community engagement. As part of the Initiative, we invite applications from early-career scholars whose research agendas demonstrate a commitment to Indigenous Studies, environmental stewardship, and community engagement in ways that align with and complement the broad themes of the Environmental Stewardship, Place, and Community Initiative. These broad themes include Indigenous epistemologies and ontologies, decolonization and cultural histories, Indigenous sovereignty and well-being, Indigenous expressive culture (for example, film, literature, theater, visual arts), traditional ecological knowledge, and Indigenous ecologies and relationships with place, among others. For this position, scholars will be encouraged and supported in pursuing their own research objectives while also connecting that work to the support and intellectual development of the larger cohort of the Initiative. Responsibilities: Contribute to the intellectual development of the cohort as an advisor on Critical Indigenous Studies. Collaborate on development of curriculum and possibly pilot curriculum that integrates diverse ways of knowing and emphasizes environmental stewardship approaches within the humanities. Collaborate on designing and facilitating two Humanities Futures Workshops. These workshops on the Twin Cities campus will invite Indigenous and other underrepresented undergraduate students to explore graduate education opportunities and how advanced education in the humanities might align with diverse career interests. Mentor interested graduate students on the Twin Cities and Duluth campuses. Required qualifications: PhD successfully defended by December 31, 2020 PhD earned within the last five years A background in areas related to Indigenous Studies Experience with and/or commitment to engaged scholarship A commitment to curriculum development and teaching with particular attention to diverse ways of knowing within the humanities Preferred: Background in environmental justice/stewardship, Indigenous epistemologies and methodologies, and humanistic fields Experience in program development and working with Indigenous and other underrepresented students Firm grounding in interdisciplinary and intersectional research methods and approaches Depending on qualifications and the interest of candidates, there may be an opportunity to teach a class through the Department of American Indian Studies or other relevant departments as well. This is a full-time, 12-month position and is funded for two years. The salary is $60,000 with a comprehensive benefits package. Negotiable start date between January 1 and August 15, 2021.
