Salary Range : 20.0000 To 20.0000 (USD) Hourly Reports To: Repatriation and Community Research Manager Fair Labor Standard Act Status: Non-Exempt Department: Collections Position Summary The NAGPRA Assistant, under the supervision and direction of the Repatriation and Community Research Manager, will be reviewing database records and other associated materials related to collection objects from San Bernardino County, California. In addition, this position will assist in preparing for NAGPRA consultation visits and other related activities, such as collections inventories and data entry, to support the implementation of the Native American and Graves Protection and Repatriation Act. The position will assist the Repatriation and Community Research Manager in the completion of various tasks needed to meet departmental goals as directed by the Manager. The NAGPRA Assistant will be expected to communicate regularly with the Manager so that progress can be monitored and evaluated. This position shares responsibilities for all aspects of the Permanent Collection with other department staff. Please note this is a full time, non-exempt, Grant-funded position that has a slated time frame of two (2) years, through September 2020. Essential Functions The NAGPRA Assistant must be able to: Communicate regularly and in a timely manner with the Manager. Maintain effective written and inter-personal communication, and under the guidance of the Manager, maintain accurate records of communication details and frequency. Work comfortably, respectfully, and appropriately with sensitive collections and sensitive information and content under the supervision of the Manager (training provided). Maintain information confidentiality, such as that is meant for internal use only, as needed and directed by the Manager. Conduct themselves professionally and respectfully with visitors and inter-departmental staff. Tasks will include, but are not limited to: Assisting in the maintenance of digital and paper files as organized by the Manager. Conducting database searches and composing reports using collections management database (MIMSY training provided). Regularly completing accurate and consistent data entry. Properly and safely handling and working around collection items, including culturally sensitive items (training provided). Accountability for Collections: The NAGPRA Assistant will spend time working in the library and archives, the collections storage areas, and the tribal consultation room. Will assist the Manager with transporting collection items to and from collections storage areas to the consultation room using carts. Will be expected to follow protocols for the safe and appropriate handling of collection items, such as applying handling instructions recommended by affiliated tribes and wearing personal protection equipment. Other Functions General Collections Management Department Work: All members of the Collections Management Department are responsible for the overall security and well‑being of the Museum collections, including monitoring and practicing proper handling and transport of collections, being present and alert in collections areas when non‑collections people are there, knowing and following Museum policy and procedures regarding security of the premises and collections areas and being available for after-hours emergencies. Minimum Qualifications Academic: Bachelor’s degree or higher in related field; i.e. American Indian Studies, Museum Studies, History, Anthropology, Information Studies. Should have an understanding of historic and contemporary issues for Native American communities and/or issues in museum collections and/or community research practices and methodologies. Professionalism: · One to three years related experience in a museum, or an equivalent combination of academic and work experience, preferred. · Must possess effective written and inter-personal communication skills. · Must possess excellent organizational skills. · Must be able to work well independently with direction from a supervisor and also have an aptitude for teamwork. · The work requires accurate attention to detail and a willingness to perform repetitive tasks. · Must possess excellent time management. · Must be conscientious. · Must be respectful towards visitors and inter-departmental staff. · Must be able to receive and comprehend instructions from their supervisor. Computer Skills: Must be proficient in Microsoft Office. Experience with relational database management programs for museum collections, particularly MIMSY XG and scanning software is desirable but not necessary. Working Conditions The position requires computer use and involves long periods of sitting. Extended work hours as needed. This position may require, upon occasion, lifting items weighing up to 25 pounds and walking up to 10 feet before placing them. Will work with historic collection items that may contain pesticide residue and other contaminants and must wear the personal protection equipment, such as dust masks and lab coats. Training and equipment will be provided. May need to drive or carpool within LA County and surrounding counties.
