Next week at the Modern Language Association convention in Philadelphia, the MLA Delegate Assembly will be voting on a resolution that condemns the University of Colorado at Boulder for violating the free speech rights of Ward Churchill and demands that Colorado reinstate Churchill to his position as a tenured professor in Ethnic Studies at the university.
Earlier this year, a jury found in favor of Churchill in his wrongful termination case against the university, but did not award non-economic damages. Also, the MLA membership earlier this year ratified a resolution passed by the Delegate Assembly last year condemning the university's investigation of Churchill.
I am a member of the Delegate Assembly, and I am curious about what opinions NAISA members have about this issue that has now been circulating for over five years.
UPDATE: The MLA Delegate Assembly debated the new Churchill resolution, but lost a quorum and so ended debate at 6:30 PM.
