The College of Social Sciences and the Political Science Department at the University of Hawaii at Manoa have strongly supported the growth of Native Hawaiian and Indigenous politics as areas of research and teaching. At the heart of the College’s vision for a globally-connected Hawaiian Place of Learning lies an ethos of Aloha ‘Āina. The College of Social Sciences seeks applications from interested and qualified candidates for a tenure-track position at the assistant professor rank to sustain and grow this area of focus within the department and college. We seek scholars who approach Native Hawaiian and Indigenous politics from a critical lens, with an emphasis on engaged scholarship and community engagement. We welcome scholars with interdisciplinary training and research experience.
Duties: Candidates will be expected to teach courses in Native Hawaiian politics, Hawai‘i politics and Indigenous politics; advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students, develop and conduct high-quality research, sustain strong community relations for teaching and research purposes, work collaboratively towards solving challenging and complex problems in Hawaiʻi and beyond, support the College’s Native Hawaiian Initiative, and participate in departmental, university, and professional activities, with a particular focus on developing interdisciplinary partnerships to advance the Indigenous politics concentration. The candidate will be expected to strengthen the college and university focus on Hawaiʻi and Oceania. Other duties as assigned.
Ph.D. in Political Science or a related field relevant to the position, with a research specialization in Native Hawaiian issues [ABD with all requirements for degree completed by date of hire considered] from an accredited college or university or foreign equivalent. Demonstrated ability to teach on Native Hawaiian and Indigenous political theories and issues. Demonstrated commitment to Native Hawaiian communities and/or political issues. Demonstrated record of peer-reviewed research commensurate with time in field.
Teaching experience with innovative educational strategies, attentive to issues of diversity; Ability to work effectively as part of an interdisciplinary team in cooperative endeavors; Ability to supplement the Indigenous politics concentration with a focus on Oceania/Pacific Islands, political theory, Indigenous governance, Indigenous epistemologies, environmental politics, and/or futures studies.
Pay range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The successful candidate willdo research that draws on decolonizing and other indigenous perspectives and that isinformed by a long-term engagement with Indigenous communities, organizations andinstitutions.The successful candidate will show an emerging record of excellence in researchdemonstrated by: 1) a record of creative and professional work that engages with collaborative/collective knowledge building with Indigenous communities, both within andbeyond the university in various public fora, 2) impactful publications in venues important tothe field of Indigenous Studies (including academic journals, edited volumes andmonographs with academic and other presses, and relevant other outlets), 3) participationin professional and other associations and organizations critical to the production anddissemination of Indigenous knowledges, 4) a commitment to obtain fellowship and/or grantfunding from competitive funding sources, and 5) strong endorsements by referees.
The successful candidate will also have a demonstrated ability to develop an excellent teachingprogram informed by Indigenous pedagogies and be a strong mentor at the undergraduateand graduate level. We are particularly interested in candidates who want to participate inincreasing Indigenous knowledges, epistemologies, and methodologies throughout thedepartment and University. Evidence of excellence in teaching will be demonstrated throughteaching accomplishments, letters of reference, and the teaching dossier outlining ateaching philosophy and approaches to knowledge building submitted as part of theapplication. Finally, the successful candidate must have a proven record of activities thatcontribute to equity and diversity across different communities.
The successful candidate will teach in the undergraduate program at the University ofToronto Mississauga and be part of a cross-departmental effort to seed an IndigenousStudies center at UTM. They will also be a member of the Graduate Department of Sociology, University of Toronto. The Religion Department at Barnard seeks applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in indigenous religions. The ideal candidate will be a specialist in Native American or First Nations religion, or in indigenous religions in the Americas. The successful candidate will bring methodological diversity to the department, which currently emphasizes literary, historical, and legal studies of religion. We would particularly welcome a colleague with expertise in ethnographic and/or fieldwork approaches.
