Tenure-Track Position

Assistant Professor: Interdisciplinary Appointment- Industrial Design and Inclusive Design

The Industrial Design (ID) undergraduate program, in partnership with the Inclusive Design graduate program (INCD) at OCAD University, invite applications from curious, unconventional, polymaths for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor as an interdisciplinary appointment shared between ID and INCD. With a focus on creative technologies and product-related design, the position would support our current efforts to build a faculty with practical, theoretical and methodological versatility with the goal of designing experiences, products and technologies to improve life, health and well-being. The position is to commence on August 1, 2017 and is subject to budgetary approval.

OCAD U is a growing institution, looking for people who will help us foster a culture and community of innovation that engenders the creation of meaningful objects, tools, and products that shape our daily lives in response to cultural, social and technological changes. We are particularly interested in candidates who aim to design for the fullest range of human diversity including ability, language, culture, gender and age. INCD and ID faculty members creatively design, engineer and apply technologies from a user-centered design approach that aims to support the diverse ways that people, objects and spaces interact.

The ideal candidate will be a designer-educator-scholar who will establish and lead teaching and research that explores transdisciplinary fields and paradigms. As a researcher, they will work with students to produce internationally recognized work, and develop collaborative relationships with industry as well as academia and the community. Applicants should be able to publish in peer-reviewed venues, and be able to obtain funding to support their work. They should value innovative and effective teaching for students from different cultural and intellectual backgrounds. Promising applicants will combine engineering virtuosity with a commitment to creative and thoughtful design. Candidates should submit their interest in response to one or more of the following categories of research, teaching, and practice:

  • Robotics* and/or human-centred computing with applied translations into industrial design;
  • Robotics and/or human-centred computing with applied translations into the built environment;
  • Robotics and/or human-centred computing with applied translations into sculpture and/or manufacturing.
  • assume a key role in the development of curriculum and pedagogical practices in relation to existing and emerging areas of Industrial Design and Inclusive Design, and course design and delivery methods in the field of design within the above-mentioned categories of research, teaching, and practice;
  • perform course outline development, studio preparation, and course delivery inclusive of lectures, critiques, grading, mid-term evaluations and final evaluations/​reviews, including responsibility for health & safety and meeting academic and curricular requirements and deadlines;
  • a Masters degree in a design-related area and a PhD in an area relevant to the embodied interaction between humans, digital products and physical architectures;
    • competencies in social robotics, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning;
    • ability to teach introductory computer science, programming, and/or robotics to design students;
  • demonstrated competencies in computer coding, which could include digital fabrication, parametric/​generative modelling, robotics and their application in industrial design research and development processes;
  • experience proactively advancing equity and sustainability in curriculum, teaching, scholarship, and creative/professional activities;
  • a proven record of promoting a respectful and inclusive work and learning environment for students, staff, and faculty.

*By robotics we are referring to techniques that enable embodied interactions among users, products, built environments, services, and systems. These could include: machine perception (such as computer vision, audition, and tactile sensing), cognition (such as planning and learning), and action (such as manipulation, kinematics, and control).

Overall, we seek candidates who use new technologies to create/engineer/invent products to address human needs. This often requires an ability to critically reflect on social, cultural, and technological change.

Summary Of Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

  • teach across multiple year levels in the Industrial Design undergraduate program and the Inclusive Design graduate program, with potential opportunity to teach across other undergraduate and graduate programs;
  • maintain an active research, professional practice and/or scholarship within relevant discipline;and
  • provide service to the faculty and University-wide governance system, as well as participate building the University community and promoting the quality of student life and University culture.


The ideal candidate will have:

  • demonstrated industry-relevant expertise as a design practitioner in the health and wellbeing sector; in research, innovation and development as part of an ​engineering design team using methods of user centered and/or inclusive design; and/or in regulatory standards pertaining to compliance with technical aspects of accessibility principles and legislation;
  • a proven record of teaching of a minimum of two years at the post-secondary level and show an aptitude for innovative studio- and learning outcome–based curriculum development;
  • previous experience teaching in interdisciplinary programs, with supervision of graduate students considered an asset;
  • a proven record of research and/or professional practice relevant to qualifications, experience and discipline;
  • a demonstrated understanding of the ways in which equity, Indigenous knowledge, and sustainability are fundamental to the quality of student experience, to innovative scholarship, and to design production; and


Salary and rank will be commensurate with experience and qualifications with access to full benefits, and pension contribution after one year of service.
