2017 NAISA Editor Search

 

Dr. Jean O’Brien and Dr. Robert Warrior will complete their term as Founding Editors of NAIS: Native American and Indigenous Studies at the end of the 2019 NAISA annual meeting. The NAISA Council has initiated the search for their successor(s), whose appointment will be a four-year term beginning June 1, 2019. To assure a smooth transition, the new editor(s) will be named in mid-2018.

 

Position Description

 

The Editor or Editors of NAIS give leadership to the organization and production of NAISA’s scholarly journal. The awarding-winning NAIS is published bi-annually through an agreement between NAISA and the University of Minnesota Press. Individuals or groups of two or more are welcome to apply for the editorship.

 

Application

 

Please submit a letter that addresses your qualifications and offers a sense of your vision for NAIS, as well as your CV. All applications are due by January 1, 2018. The council will conduct interviews at the 2018 annual meeting. Candidates for the position of Editor should be prepared to attend and participate in interviews at the annual meeting. We strongly encourage candidates to discuss their intentions with their academic administrators (deans, department chairs, etc.) so that they can come to the interview prepared to articulate the institutional support they will receive if appointed to the editorship (for example, course releases, graduate and/or other student or staff support, any additional financial contribution). The new Editor will be expected to be in regular contact with the current Editors during 2018-2019 to ensure an orderly transition, taking over full responsibility on June 1, 2019

 

The Community and Regional Planning Department at the University of New Mexico is seeking candidates for a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor in the area of Water Resources Planning, Development and Sustainability to commence in the Fall 2018 semester. Strengths in one or more of the following is desired: arid lands, governance, hydrology, watershed management, ecosystem services, spatial analysis, rural planning, climate change adaptation, Indigenous communities, Chicana and Chicano communities, or Latin America. Rethinking how people manage water is critical to building resilient and just communities. Teaching responsibilities will include graduate and undergraduate courses in planning.

 The Community and Regional Planning Department has a diverse faculty and student body who are committed to social transformation, collective action and community engagement that works towards social justice and resilient communities. The Community and Regional Planning Department offers two degrees, a BA in Environmental Planning and Design and an accredited Master of Community and Regional Planning. The MCRP program has concentrations in Natural Resources and Environmental Planning, Indigenous Planning, Community Development, and Physical Planning and Design. The Community and Regional Planning Department is affiliated with the Resource Center for Raza Planning and the Indigenous Design and Planning Institute. About one-quarter of graduate students are enrolled in dual degrees with Latin American Studies, Water Resources, or Public Administration. About 65 graduate students and 55 undergraduates are enrolled each year. The faculty is considering embarking on a PhD program.

 Minimum Qualifications: 1) PhD or advanced ABD status in planning or a related field; 2) a current research agenda and/or practice experience in planning related fields. The successful candidate will be expected to complete all requirements for the Ph.D. by August 2018.

 Preferred Qualifications: 1) record of teaching experience; 2) demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities; 3) direct experience with community based practice; and 4) the ability to work in interdisciplinary settings.
